The Alabama Department of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention, Children’s Trust Fund, in partnership with the University of Alabama’s College of Human Environmental Sciences and the Center for Business and Economic Research at the Culverhouse College of Business, recently released The Cost of Child Maltreatment to the Alabama Economy 2023. The report estimates that child maltreatment costs Alabama more than $8 billion in tangible economic losses in 2023, with an average intervention cost of $871,979 per first-time case. Lost productivity accounts for the largest share of the burden at $6.4 billion, or 79.4 percent of total costs, demonstrating the long-term impact of child maltreatment on workforce participation, earnings, and economic stability.
